Academic Session 2024-2025
- The 7th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024 will focus on the themes of Anaemia, Growth Monitoring, Complementary Feeding, Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi, Technology for better Governance, and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam. The month-long campaign aims to further intensify efforts to combat malnutrition and promote holistic well-being across the nation. To celebrate 7th Rashtriya Poshan Maah, the department of Food and Nutrition arranged an inter departmental Poster Competition under the theme “Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi” for the students on 23rd September, 2024 as an in-house extension programme.
- In the second phase as outreach programme the department in collaboration with NSS , SNGGDCG performed a street drama on “Anaemia Mukt Bharat” in the adopted slum at 19, Alipore Road for the slum dwellers (on 24th September, 2024) and also at Alipore Litle Learners KMCP Municipal English Medium School, 22 Judges Court Road, Kolkata 27 (on 23rd September, 2024). This extension activities were performed to propagate nutrition awareness in community.
- On October 1, 2024, the CBCS batch of 2022 from the Department of Food and Nutrition organized a warm and heartfelt farewell programme for the outgoing 2021–2024 batch. A highlight of the occasion was the inspiring and enlightening speech delivered by the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Madam, who encouraged the students to embrace the future with confidence, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence. Her motivating words resonated deeply with everyone present, instilling hope and determination as the graduating batch prepared to step into new horizons.
- On November 27, 2024, the Department of Food & Nutrition organized an insightful one-day field visit for 15 UG CBCS Food & Nutrition (Hons) students (5th Semester,2022-25 batch) to UPHC-74, located at Ward No. 74, 19B, Chetla Hut Road, Kolkata-700027. The primary objective of the visit was to observe the intricacies of the immunization process and related public health services. Under the expert supervision of the Immunization Officers, the students engaged in a comprehensive study, gaining valuable practical exposure as part of their Semester V (HONS) Practical syllabus (Paper: Public Health & Epidemiology DSE-A5), offered by the University of Calcutta. Accompanied by their departmental escort teacher. The event not only enhanced the students' understanding of immunization protocols but also reinforced the department’s commitment to integrating real-world public health practices with academic learning.
Academic Session 2023-2024
- To celebrate 6th Rashtriya Poshan Maah under the theme of "Suposhit Bharat, Sakshar Bharat, Sashakt Bharat" (Nutrition-rich India, Educated India, Empowered India) through a life-cycle approach, students of 5th Semester Food & Nutrition (Hons) along with NSS unit of our college participated in a awareness programme in the local slum area, Gopalnagar on 23.09.2023. Students demonstrated and discussed on the following topics-
about importance of balanced diet, literacy and self-empowerment to the local community people related with this year theme of Poshan Maah Awareness on importance of millet consumption [keeping in view International Year of Millets (IYMI)-2023.]
- On December 13, 2023, a group of 13 UG CBCS Food & Nutrition (Hons) students from the 3rd Semester (2022–2025 batch) of our college, accompanied by an escorting faculty member, undertook a field visit to Sonarpur ICDS Centre No. 26, located at Srikhanda Jagoron Sangha, Panchpota, Kolkata – 700152. The visit, was part of the practical curriculum for the Core Course 3 (Community Nutrition) under the UG CBCS programme affiliated with the University of Calcutta.During the visit, students conducted a field survey and carried out anthropometric assessments of the beneficiaries, gaining practical exposure to the services offered under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. The experience proved to be highly enriching, as it allowed students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world community nutrition settings, thereby enhancing their understanding of public health and nutrition interventions at the grassroots level.
- On January 3, 2024, the Department of Food & Nutrition organized an insightful one-day field visit for 15 UG CBCS Food & Nutrition (Hons) students (5th Semester,2021-24 batch) to UPHC-74, located at Ward No. 74, 19B, Chetla Hut Road, Kolkata-700027. The primary objective of the visit was to observe the intricacies of the immunization process and related public health services. Under the expert supervision of the WHO Immunization Officer, the students engaged in a comprehensive study, gaining valuable practical exposure as part of their Semester V (HONS) Practical syllabus (Paper: Public Health & Epidemiology DSE-A5), offered by the University of Calcutta. The event not only enhanced the students' understanding of immunization protocols but also reinforced the department’s commitment to integrating real-world public health practices with academic learning.
- Alumni-Led Diet Counselling Session: Ms. Kakan Bera, first year alumnae of the of the department from 2016-2019 batch currently serving as a Dietitian at Desun Hospital, conducted a Diet Counselling Session on April 23, 2024, at the college campus. The session was organized by the NSS Unit of the college and was attended by students, faculty members, and non-teaching staff. The program focused on promoting balanced dietary habits and raising awareness on the importance of nutrition in daily life. This initiative reflects the department’s continued efforts to engage alumni in meaningful ways and to promote health and wellness within the college community.
Academic Session 2022-2023
- To celebrate the 5th Rashtriya Poshan Maah a Nutrition Awareness programme was arranged for the Beneficiaries of ICDS (Pregnant and Lactating Mother, under 5 children and adolescents girls),Centre no 11,Tiljala Kolkata to cover various aspects related to nutrition and health, including the importance of different food groups, balanced diet, menstrual hygiene, breastfeeding practices, Kangaroo mother care technique, iron-rich foods, weaning foods, and the preparation of low-cost home-based nutritious supplementary food products held on 14/09/2022.
Two first year alumnae of the department from 2016-2019 batch Subhadrita Das and Srijita Mukherjee as a resource preson took a significant role along with the existing students of the department in this awareness programme.
- Also along with NSS unit of our college, we visited local slum area as a part of their special camp on 19.09.2022 and there the students also demonstrated and discussed about low-cost supplementary food to the local community people.
- Just like previous years, 5 days (29.03.2023, 01.04.2023, 05.04.2023, 12.04.2023, 26.04.2023) ‘Workshop on “Methods of Food Preservation” was conducted by Food and Nutrition department to train the students on household food preservation techniques. Smt. Kanika Datta, vocational food preservation instructor (Sarada Vidyabhavan) and project technician in UGCUPA 2 project was the resource person, who actively taught the students about the various processing techniques and also demonstrated methods like preparation of Jam, Jelly, Crush, Sauce etc. It was a wonderful learning experience for the students. Students from the department participated in the workshop and learned the techniques of preservation from the eminent guest.
- In keeping with the cherished traditions of the Department of Food and Nutrition, a grand farewell programme was organized on June 2, 2023, by the CBCS batches of 2021 and 2022 to bid a warm and heartfelt adieu to the outgoing 2020–2023 batch. Upholding the department’s legacy of unity and celebration, the day also witnessed a joyous freshers’ welcome for the 2022 batch, graciously arranged by their immediate seniors from the 2020 and 2021 batches.
Academic Session 2021-2022
- A 5 days’ Workshop (26/02/22, 5/3/22,12/3/22,26/3/22,9/4/22) on “Methods of Food Preservation” was conducted by Food and Nutrition department to train the students on household food preservation techniques. Smt. Kanika Datta, vocational food preservation instructor (Sarada Vidyabhavan) and project technician in UGCUPA 2 project was the resource person, who actively taught the students about the various processing techniques and also demonstrated methods like preparation of Jam, Jelly, Crush, Sauce etc. It was a wonderful learning experience for the students.
Due to the outbreak of the pandemic, the Department of Food and Nutrition had to postpone its traditional freshers’ welcome and farewell programme. However, to make up for the lost time and to celebrate the spirit of togetherness, a grand and memorable combined event was held on April 23, 2022.
- The CBCS batches of 2020 and 2021 took the initiative to organize a heartfelt farewell ceremony for the outgoing batches of 2018–2021 and 2019–2022, expressing deep appreciation for their contributions and wishing them success in their future endeavors.
- Adding to the festive spirit, the 2019 and 2020 batches also came together to warmly welcome the new students of the 2021 batch through a vibrant freshers’ welcome programme. In a gesture of camaraderie and unity, the 2019–2022 batch extended a special welcome to the 2020 batch as well, making the occasion a beautiful celebration of transitions, friendships, and new beginnings
Academic session 2020-2021:
- With the onset of the Corona pandemic, all the offline classes were suspended. In the midst of this, we still planned an online awareness programme for celebrating National Nutrition Month, which comprises an informative lecture by Prof. Santa Dutta Dey and an awareness drama performed by our CBCS students in a completely online mode. It was released and circulated online (YouTube profile) on 13.09.2020.
A 58-minute video consisting of three educational play and one educational recital on nutrition awareness programme of RASTRIYA POSHAN MAAH 2020 uploaded to the Facebook page of college and through youtube on 30.09.2020.

Academic session 2019-2020:
- Demonstration of educational role play “Pushtir Paanch kahon” for the local slum dwellers of Gopalnagar, Alipore on 03.09.2019 arranged by Department of Food and Nutrition on the theme Har Ghar Poshan Vyavahar of poshan maah. “Poushtik Naru” prepared by students in the department laboratory was also distributed.
- The same Educational role play “Pushtir Paanch kahon” was demonstrated among Adolescent college students in inter college drama competition arranged by Department of Home Science, University of Calcutta, Viharilal College campus on the occasion of National Nutrition month, where the second prize was won by this college on 09.09.2019.
- The students of 3rd year along with the students of Semester III, Food and Nutrition (Hons.) , visited Mother Dairy Industry, located in Dankuni, West Bengal on 27.09.2019 as field visit which is a part of their curriculum under the syllabus of University of Calcutta. They have learned about the various aspects of dairy technology and got an idea about the processing of milk and milk products.
- Our students under CBCS went to the Serampore -Uttarpara Project to conduct field survey in their ICDS centre on 27.09.2019 gathered many knowledge regarding the services of ICDS and studied various parameters of the beneficiaries there.
- The students of 3rd year, Food and Nutrition Hons. also visited canning industry for training on preservation techniques from 25.11.2019 to 27.11.2019, where they got an opportunity to see the unique methods of food preservation and the benefits and techniques of canning in large scale. Under the active guidance of the staffs and employees, the students prepared preserved food items like Jam, Jellies, Pickles, Squashes etc. This industry visit enriched their knowledge immensely on the usefulness of food preservation
- On February 22, 2020, the first CBCS batch of 2018 and 2019 from the Department of Food and Nutrition graciously organized a heartfelt farewell programme for the outgoing students of the 2017–2020 batch. In a delightful coincidence, the outgoing students of the 2017–2020 batch also hosted a warm freshers’ welcome for the incoming students of Batch 2018 and 2019 on the very same day.
Academic session 2018-2019:
- We along with the dept. of Physiology organized an extension class on career prospects of nutrition by Tanisha Raima Basu, a graduate from Texas State University for the students of Bio Science Departments.
- We conducted another extension class cum 5 days’ workshop by Dr.Kakoli Sinha Roy, Lecturer, Department of Biochemistry, Vivekananda College, Kolkata. She was the resource person, who actively taught the students about the various processing techniques and also demonstrated methods like preparation of Jam, Jelly, Crush, Sauce etc. It was a wonderful learning experience for the students on food preservation techniques.
- The Department of Food & Nutrition in collaboration with NSS organized Nutrition awareness programme on Optimal infant and young child feeding practice for better child health as a part of National nutrition week celebration held on 4/09/2018. Lecture given by the principal on “eating disorders”, interdepartmental poster competition on –“Effects of nutrition in daily life” by students and food stalls organised by students of food & nutrition department.
- We also went to Britannia Biscuits Pvt. Limited as a field visit a bakery unit and learned the various processing techniques of food operation unit. It was a great leaming experience for our students
- On that day we also went to an ICDS centre in Garden rich for performing field visit and gathered many knowledge regarding the services of ICDS and studied various parameters of the beneficiaries there.
- Our 3rd year students (the session 2016-2019), went to the training centre under the agricultural marketing office on 22.01.2019 see the unique methods of food preservation and the benefits and techniques of canning in large scale.
- Existing students of the Department ,Batch 2017 arranged farewell programme for outgoing batch of 2016-19 on 25/2/2019.
Academic session 2017-2018:
- In 2017, department celebrated National Nutrition Week on 06.09.2017. The theme was “Optimal infant and young child feeding practice: Better child health”. Our key speaker was Dr. Krishna Roy, our honourable principal and professor of dept. of Physiology and she delivered a lecture on importance of breast feeding. We also organized health awareness programs by performing a small socio-drama on issues of Nutrition and held inter departmental poster competition our students set up various stalls with nutritious foods for everyone.
- our student also performed this play in the department of Home Science on occasion of nutrition week celebration, University of Calcutta and earned appreciation for their effort.
- Among other activities like conducting one day state level seminar along with other bio science department of this college. Students also participated in poster presentation in such seminars and took part in science exhibition where they demonstrated various techniques of identification of food adulteration.
- All faculty members and the students went to an ICDS centre Shalap Athletic Club, located at Domjur, Howrah on 28.02.2018 for conducting health survey to understand their all over nutritional status of the beneficiaries of the said ICDS centre.
Academic session 2016-2017:
- It was the year that this department came to its formation. In the first year itself the department conducted National Nutrition Week on 2016, to celebrate that year’s theme “life cycle approach for better nutrition”. Our key speaker was Sri. Jagathbandhu Chakroborty who provided us with information on food adulteration. We also organized health awareness programs by conducting anthropometric measurements of the participants and held inter departmental poster competition.
