Department of English

The Department of English was established in 2015 as one of the founding departments of Sister Nibedita Government's General Degree College for Girls, under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta. The department is dedicated to the academic development and holistic education of women through literature, language, and critical thought. With a strong focus on British, Indian, and World literatures, as well as communication studies and literary criticism, the department aims to develop analytical, expressive, and interpretive skills among students. The curriculum enables students to explore a wide range of themes, cultures, and philosophical inquiries through language, making it a gateway to personal growth and professional opportunity.

Curriculum:

  • The English Honours programme follows the Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF) under NEP 2020 as introduced by the University of Calcutta since 2023-24 session.
  • The curriculum integrates gender issues, environmental issues, feminist literary criticism, and literature of marginalized voices, including
    •  Feminist theory
    • Violence against women
    • Women’s writings, sexism, and patriarchy
    • Critique of Capitalism

ICT and Digital Learning Intregration

  • Smart classrooms are available for English department use, supporting interactive learning.
  • Google Classroom, Zoom, and Google Forms were actively used during the pandemic and beyond.
  • ICT-based tools are employed for both teaching and student presentations.

Library and Learning Resources

  • Students and faculty of the English Department access both print and digital resources, including e-books, journals, and repositories.
  • The central library uses Koha software and has a dedicated reading room to encourage literary exploration.

NEP Implementation

  • Under the NEP-aligned CCF system, English Honours students are required to take three Interdisciplinary Courses (IDCs) in their first three semesters, promoting holistic education.
  • The department aligns its course delivery with ABC (Academic Bank of Credit) awareness and training. 

Faculty Research and Contribution

  • Faculty members from English contribute to interdisciplinary seminars, workshops, and value-based education.
  • Faculty are encouraged to pursue in-service PhDs and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
