Department of Sanskrit
Department of Sanskrit is one of the initially established departments of this college. Its history, therefore, begins in 2015. Students started to get admitted the very next year. In 2018 The University of Calcutta introduced CBCS, hence this department conducted the teaching and learning under the curricula of both 1+1+1 and the new system. The number of the faculties increased to three in 2019 and the actions of the department were elevated to a much better level. Unfortunately, the pandemic broke out next year followed by the lockdown. The entire system of education had to be conducted online mode. Yet the department successfully conducted the classes and the examinations along with other activities. All students studying under different systems passed with good class marks. Rani Piyada stood top with first class marks among all the students passing out in 2021 of this college.
Now the Department is conducting the courses of Major (erstwhile Honours), IDC (Inter-Disciplinary Course) and IKS (Indian Knowledge System) under CVAC 4 (Common Value Added Course) in collaboration with the departments of Computer Science and History. All the teachers and the students of the department are looking forward to achieve not only good academic result but an expansion of the activities of the department.
Scope of the subject:
Sanskrit had once been the pan Indian medium of written communication without leaving its gravity of classical nature. Studies in Sanskrit not only provide a good score in the examinations but motivate the awakening of self. From the past we learn what we actually are today, what we inherit and how should we cop up with the changing situations. Learning of Sanskrit expands the linguistic studies as it includes a greater field of languages. No study of Sanskrit can be fulfilled ignoring Prakrit, Apabhraṃśa and Pali. Especially in Sanskrit dramas various Prakrits and Apabhraṃśa dialogues play an important role. There is also a good scope to study the ancient Indian history and even archaeology and museology with the help of Sanskrit. Study of ancient Indian science and technology can also be introduced via Sanskrit. In all, the subject Sanskrit, if explored, provides multiple areas of studies and works.
