About the Department
The Department of Microbiology, Sister Nibedita Govt General Degree College for Girls was established in 2015. For the time being, IDC and MINOR Courses In 4 Year B.Sc Program (CCF) were offered to the students. This courses primarily focus on the study of microorganisms and their significance in the various field. Students will learn about both the beneficial and harmful role of microorganisms in different aspects including health care, public health, science policy, food safety, pharmaceuticals, industrial microbiology, and scientific research. The aim of this course is to provide students a detailed study of microorganisms both in theoretically as well as practically. Microbiology was introduced in the UG curriculum of the University of Calcutta in the year 1997 as a job-oriented course keeping in mind the high demand of microbiologists at that time in a wide arena of industries spanning Biotechnology, dairy products, processed food and beverages, health, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, animal husbandry as well as other agro-industrial products. It represents the intersection between Biochemistry, Molecular biology, Bacteriology and Virology. Over the years, students of all batches have fostered in the good ambience of the Department where faculties have taken care of their queries, needs and tried to ensure that they reach their fullest academic potential.
