Sister Nibedita Government General Degree College for Girls is a new addition in the map of women education of Bengal. This college is situated in Hastings House, whose vast campus has already been a hub of women education; as it had a higher secondary school for girls, two teacher training colleges and an institute for physical education for women. The only thing the campus lacked was a general degree college for girls, which was fulfilled by the establishment of our college.

Affiliated to the University of Calcutta this young institution aspires to be a strong source of women empowerment. We ardently believe that education is power, and for us, the term ‘education’ is not confined within syllabi, classroom teachings and degrees, it is a much wider term. Proper education enables an individual to grow as a complete human being and we are determined to impart that education to our students. We arrange seminars, invited lectures on different issues of modern science and on different socio-cultural issues by eminent speakers, to make our students aware of nature around them and also of society around them. Various value-added courses and skill development courses are offered to them to make them righteous and self confident enough to be financially independent. We know that some of our students will progress to higher education, some will get a job after completing graduation, but there will always be a group of students who will not pursue the above two future prospects,  and for them we must do something by which they can proceed to some entrepreneurship and self-employment. For this purpose we have initiated an incubation hub to foster entrepreneurship. This initiative provides them with essential resources, mentorship, and training to develop their own businesses.

We feel that it is our duty to sensitize our students regarding their rights and also of their duties and for this purpose we organise different workshops and lectures, which focuses on their rights to have a sexual harassment free, ragging free environment on the one hand and their duties towards other people, towards their country and towards the whole nature, on the other.

In order to bring out their talents in different aspects and for an all-round development of personality we encourage them to contribute their original writings in our college magazine, participate in sports, cultural functions, debates and competitions and in different outreach programmes.

We sincerely hope that our students will acquire that vision which will enable them to look beyond the here and now and be a true global citizen.
